The Roots of the Rivalry

| The root of this rivalry lies in the 1985 NCAA championship game, in which underdog Villanova defeated John Thompson's Hoya team, which had wrested the championship title the year before. The rivalry is also propelled by the two different denominations each school supports -- Georgetown's founders were Jesuits, while Villanova's were Augustinian.
