All About Otto
Brief history of our mascot: SU's mascot wasn't always an adorable orange. In its early days, the Syracuse University mascot was a Native American warrior named after the Saltine warrior allegedly found and unearthed from under the foundations of the SU women's gym. The archaelogical find ended up being a hoax, but the mascot remained until Native American students opposed its stereotypical portrayal of Native Americans in 1978.
Otto the Orange was born in 1990 out of a a desperate search for a new icon for SU. He was known as The Orange until finally christened and embraced as "Otto".
